Malawi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world.
Agriculture is the main livelihood. There is a small industry, but most goods are imported. A group of small-scale companies focus on craft work, catering, and services.
A large group of young people have completed primary school and like to start working but are insufficiently qualified for this. Trainings are private and to expensive for them so they are forced into unemployment or work for low wages.
Global Development Africa Foundation, in collaboration with the Lilongwe Vocational Training College ( LVTC), has taken the initiative to realize a Vocational Training Center where young people can follow targeted training .
The target group will consist of people between the ages of 12 and 24 years, male and female. They have successfully completed their primary school.
Objectives:
- Strengthen vocational education in the project area.
- Strengthen employment in the project area.
- Promoting that young people can follow specific training.
- Promoting socio-economic self-reliance of young people.
- Developing a network of employers in the region.
Project design:
To give young people more chances on the labor or start their own business, we will start the Training Centre by the following project activities.
Rentals/ Construction of the Vocational Centre:
A new building will be constructed in the South of Lilongwe with an area of about 1200m2. It consists of four classrooms, room for the staff and administration, storage and two toilets. The building will be constructed in such a way that extension is possible and a first and second floor can be built.
Equipment for the training center
For the establishment of the Centre are necessary:
– Tables and chairs.
– Blackboards.
– Cupboards.
– Educational material.
– 25 laptops.
– Carpenter’s tools.
– Office equipment.
Vocational training
The students will participate in areas:
* Carpentry.
* ICT.
The first year the students will be offered two days per week in theoretical subjects like: English/French, arithmetic, mathematics, and history. The other 3 days they will perform practical work. In the second year they must conduct a number of assignments under the guidance of experienced teachers. This will be concluded with a three-monthly internship at a company in which the students have to conduct a number of assignments. We assume that fifty students per year will attend their education.
At the end of the second year, students who have an interest in starting their own company, will participate in a training course aimed at this scope; product development, target group, marketing, finance etc. Pupils can also take out a loan with the LVTC via microcredit for the first start-up . This need to be repaid after 5 years.
In addition, the LVTC will guide all students looking for a paid job or starting an own business. This supervision will continue for one year after the completion of the training.
A funding up to €70.600, = is needed to make sure the project fully can start .
